Vandana Mengane

Title: Shiva Linga, Artist name: Vandana Mengane

Shiva Linga's have been found in countless archeological sites from as early as the 2nd Century BCE.

In Sanskrit, Linga means a "mark" or a symbol, which points to an inference. Thus, the Shiva Linga is a symbol of Shiva: a mark that reminds of the Omnipotent formless.

The ancient sages and seers of India prescribed Linga to be installed in the temples by consecrating energy that would help people focus their attention and induce concentration of the mind for meditative experience. In Puranas Linga also signifies Satya, Jnana, and Ananta—Truth, Knowledge, and Infinity.

In this artwork the artist also depicts Nandi and Snake around Shiva Linga.

Nandi is one of Shiva’s chief attendants and occasionally is depicted in sculpture as a bull-headed dwarf figure. Nandi is a symbolism of eternal waiting because waiting is considered the greatest virtue in Vedic culture. One who knows how to simply sit, and wait is naturally meditative.

Snake is the first creature which will know even the slightest fundamental change that happens on this planet, because his whole body is in touch with the ground. Also, it is considered that Mysticism is a certain dimension of perception, and the snake has come endowed with that capability. Thus, if one becomes very meditative, the first creature which is drawn towards that is a snake. This could be one of the reasons why snakes are always sculpted around Linga in the caves.
